A Lapsed Anarchist's Approach to Building a Great Business

by Karl Worley, Co-Founder of Biscuit Love restaurants in Nashville

We first discovered Zingerman's a few years back and began listening to a few of their free podcasts available at their site (www.zingtrain.com). Zingerman's is a hospitality company in Ann Arbor, Michigan that includes Zingerman's Deli. We have since taken a deep dive by reading their books and are beginning to integrate its lessons into our culture at Biscuit Love. It was one of the best decisions we have made.

Written by Ari Weinzweig, his book begins with Ari’s 12 Natural Laws of Building a Great Business. In this chapter, he outlines 12 problems we all face as we attempt to build a world-class business. It not only showed us that the issues we were facing as we grew were normal, but it also gave us ways to use these and overcome the challenges. The book then goes into detail about creating a vision for your organization. We have since integrated visioning at an executive level, and also into the daily lives of ourselves and our managers.

I would say of the books we have read, this one has changed the way we run our business more than any other book. It was an easy read, as the chapters are short, and Ari’s writing style keeps you engaged. Learning from such an iconic business and seeing that they had had many of the same struggles with growing was reassuring, and allowed us not to get stuck in the challenges of a startup!
